Imazapyr works by inhibiting the enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), also known as acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS). When imazapyr disrupts this enzyme, the target plants experience halted growth and eventual death due to amino acid deficiency. It is also effective at low doses, reducing the quantity of chemical needed per application. Despite its advantages, imazapyr has notable environmental considerations. Imazapyr is an organic heterocyclic herbicide developed by the American Cyanamid Company. It is a lethal herbicide. Its isopropylamine salt can be used before or after germination. It can be quickly absorbed by the roots and leaves of cultivated weeds, inhibiting the biosynthesis of the side chain amino acids of cultivated weeds, preventing the growth of weeds and causing them to die.
