With Latest Beta Release of Mozilla Firefox 3, Comodo EV SSL Certificates Can Now Protect
Incorporation of support for EV SSL certificates into Firefox is seen as an important benchmark in the wide scale deployment of EV SSL certificates for all online businessesJERSEY CITY, NJ February 14, 2008 - Mozilla Developer Center recently announced that Firefox 3 Beta 3 is now available for download. This marks an important milestone in the widespread adoption of new browser security measures such as Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates to protect site visitors from phishing sites. The BETA release is an important first step in enabling millions of Firefox internet visitors to be protected in online transactions. The official, full release of Firefox 3 is expected later this year.
With its ability to recognize Comodo EV SSL Certificates, this new version of Firefox enables Internet users to see the reassuring green address bar. The green bar signals to consumers they have reached a legitimate site verified by Comodo, providing end user protection of sensitive personal information, such as passwords, bank account numbers and Social Security Numbers. The Mozilla Foundation announced that the goal of the enhancements to Firefox was largely related to improving security in online activities. Other enhancements include faster page rendering, more personalization through one-click bookmarking, and better downloading - including a progress indicator in the status bar and anti-virus checks.
BACKGROUND ON EV SSL CERTIFICATES
What created the need for more security indicators in the browser?
High profile incidents of fraud and phishing scams have made Internet users very concerned about identity theft. Before they enter sensitive data, they want proof that the Web site can be trusted and their information will be encrypted. Without it, they might abandon their transaction.
To meet this growing security need in the market, Comodo, led by CEO Melih Abdulhayoglu, initially organized and became a founding member of the C/AB Forum (Certification Authority and Browsers). This body was charged with creating guidelines that standardized online authentication of businesses. A key accomplishment of this consortium was the launch of EV SSL certificates early in 2007.
What are EV SSL certificates?
EV SSL certificates are an SSL certificate that provides a new type of identity confirming visual indicator in the address bar that is reflective of a merchant's verified identity and assures consumers that a merchant has met the rigorous and standardized authentication requirements established by the C/AB Forum. Since EV SSL certificates are only issued to online businesses that have been verified, fraudsters will be restricted from getting these certificates which assures consumers that a site with an EV SSL certificate is authentic. This drives accountability back into online transactions which increases online trust.
How will EV SSL certificates increase consumer confidence?
Online businesses that deploy Comodo EV SSL Certificates help to build trust and confidence among consumers by offering them immediate and visible assurance that they are dealing with a reputable e-commerce site.

As the world's second largest Certification Authority, Comodo has continually innovated to create solutions that deliver the highest levels of encryption, authentication and security on the market today. Comodo's EV SSL certificates deliver key competitive advantages over the leading brand:
* More sophisticated deployment technology reduces deployment costs based on Comodo's patent-pending EV AUTO-Enhancer™ - Automatic Deployment and Maintenance Technology. This technology allows online businesses to quickly, efficiently and with little manual intervention deploy EV SSL on all pages by automatically installing Comodo's new EV root certificate into the trusted root store of the user's browser whenever an https session is initiated. Comodo's EV AUTO-Enhancer™ technology works without any webpage modifications and works even when JavaScript is disabled in users' browsers.
* Cost savings of over 70% on a single or multi year terms representing thousands of dollars saved per certificate.
* Advanced authentication infrastructure ensures efficient management of stringent business verification processes to ensure timely issuance of EV SSL certificates to verified sites.
"Mitigating trust threats continue to be a top priority for Comodo because the Internet is still evolving." said Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO and Chief Security Architect of Comodo. "Comodo is taking an active role in establishing the technologies needed to protect people's identities. Today, consumers can't be sure who is the entity behind an email or they worry about their passwords being stolen from them. The Comodo group of companies approach is to empower end users to protect themselves with a combination of free, award winning desktop solutions and new authentication capabilities that online businesses deploy on their site. This drives a new level of accountability into all online transactions and EV SSL is a large part of that strategy."
