How India's Only Community of Tribal Designers is Connecting with the World through Design

The Tribal Design Forum, established in 2021, brings together designers and creative professionals from India's diverse tribal communities. It is actively working to develop design as a methodology to address the challenges faced by these communities. Prominent members of the forum are leveraging their specialized skills to preserve the rich art, culture, and heritage of their communities while presenting them in modern, contemporary forms to a global audience. This approach not only fosters emotional connections with people worldwide but also generates economic opportunities.

Over the past three years, the forum has been hosting weekly online sessions with top global domain experts who have worked with tribal communities. These sessions provide India's young tribal designers with a platform to learn and understand best practices. For many, this is the first opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue and draw inspiration from diverse perspectives.

The Tribal Design Forum organizes programs in areas such as textiles, art, culture, technology, design, and tourism in collaboration with stakeholders from tribal communities. It has hosted bootcamps, meetups, visual art contests, essay competitions, and photography contests to foster engagement and creativity.

This year, recognizing the underrepresentation of tribal designers in India's design industry, the forum has launched an initiative to raise awareness among tribal youth and their parents about career opportunities in design. In a country like India, where the design industry is growing at a rate of 25%, the sector faces a significant gap - with only 7,000 designers available for an industry that requires 60,000. This highlights immense potential for growth and opportunity.

From November 23 to December 4, the forum will host online sessions covering 10 key design disciplines. Alumni from India's premier design institute, the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, will provide guidance on topics such as admission processes, subject comprehension, career prospects, skills and tools, work environments, personal growth, and the relationship between design, industry, and society. The covered design fields include:
