BoeSha presents zone-0-lighting system

BS 780000 is a lighting system of high light intensity which - after appropriate work permission - is certified for use within the highly sensitive zone 0 according to Directive 94/9/EC and the explosion protection standards of the EN 60079 series. The lighting system fulfills both the practical and the Ex safety requirements, which means that as much as possible light is produced while being extremely limited regarding currency and voltage parameters. For the zone-0-lighting system BS 780000 a German Patent has been applied.

GENERAL DESIGN:

The zone-0-lighting system BS 780000 consists of the LED-lighting unit BS 780100 and the power supply BS 780200 which are inseparably connected by means of the special cable BS 780300. The lighting unit is installed within an Ex e-enclosure and it can be used as portable appliance in any position within zone 0. It is fed by the power supply, which has to be placed outside zone 0, via intrinsically safe circuits (Ex ib IIC). Mains connection is established outside the explosion hazardous area.

PRACTICAL OPERATION:

The zone-0-lighting system as well as all accessories (mains connecting lead, power supply, special connecting lead, lighting unit and - optionally - tripod for lighting unit) are installed on a two-wheeled pneumatic-tyred transporter - wheel external diameter 260 mm, wheel width 80 mm. Because of its comparably moderate total weight this transporter can easily - 'with one hand' - be pulled or pushed to the place of operation - e. g. for inspection purposes to a fuel or mineral oil tank. The mains connection (230 V AC ± 10 %) of the power supply is established outside the explosion hazardous area. The mains connecting lead, which is designed according to customer's requirements regarding length and type of plug, is wound off and the transporter with the lighting unit, the power supply and the special connecting lead is moved into zone 1 - in the afore mentioned operation case preferably close to a tank entrance hatch. There, the lighting unit and the connecting lead (between lighting unit and power supply) are taken off the transporter and the chemically and oil resistant connecting lead, which may be as long as 50 m, must be wound off completely. For use in explosion groups IIC and IIB the connecting lead is equipped with a metallic sheath for protection against electrostatic charge. For operation in explosion group IIA, which, among others, contains the hydrocarbon mixtures petroleum (including petrol for driving), pure benzene, fuel oil, kerosene, Diesel oi and motor benzol, protection against electrostatic charge is not necessary. As soon as the mains connection of the power supply has been established the system is in operation and the lighting unit (with movable handle on the back) can be taken into zone 0, i. e. into the interior of the tank, for inspection. There it is installed in any required position. On customer's request, a special tripod for positioning and adjustment of the lighting unit is supplied. Adjustment of the illumination direction by means of the tripod is particularly easy as the connecting lead - for example in opposite to optic fibre cables - is very flexible. After conclusion of each inspection operation the lighting unit together with the connecting lead has to be completely removed from zone 0.
In terms of explosion protection the lighting unit is classed as "indestructible". The transparent 25lense cover consists of impact proof (minimum 20 Joule) polycarbonate and it effects optimum light distribution. Below the cover - on a white or mirrored reflector - there are 524 high-power light emitting diodes (average life 50000 operating hours) which in coordination with the lense cover effect an extraordinarily good surface and space illumination. Depending on the type of reflector - white or mirrored - at a distance of five meters 35 or 40 Lux (illuminated surface approx. Ø 2m ≈ 3.1 m²) and at a distance of ten meters still 15 or 22 Lux (illuminated surface approx. Ø 4m ≈ 12.6 m²) are measured. Systems existing up to the present only supply round about 25 and 7 Lux while just illuminating surfaces of Ø 0.9 m ≈ 0.7 m² and Ø 1.8 m ≈ 2.6 m².
All warning and information signs required for practical operation are attached to the transporter and to the appliances which are installed thereon. In addition, the transporter is equipped with a sturdy case which provides the following informations in the shape of string-fastened lamina cards: the ECtype examination certificate, the operating instructions and a coloured design and operating diagram.
