Monster Poll Reveals Negative Impact of Employees Working Beyond Scheduled Hours

The poll's insights reveal that various aspects of employees' lives suffer when they regularly work beyond their scheduled hours or are expected to be accessible at all times. Work-life balance is disrupted and elements of life like sleep schedules, mental health, and work quality are all negatively impacted.

Prioritizing employee well-being not only encourages productivity and job satisfaction in the workplace, but it also increases healthy habits and strong mental and physical health. Conversely, expecting regular overtime and constant accessibility, regardless of time, can lead to burnout, increased stress, and poor job performance. The survey results illustrate that an overworked team poses a threat to a company's reputation and bottom line.

"We all get the same 24 hours, and in that amount of time, we have to figure out how to do everything we need and want to do," says leadership coach Barbara Palmer. "If I over-index the time that I work, that time has to come from somewhere else… If everyone is consistently working nights and weekends, that means employees have to forgo rest, recovery, family and friend time, self-care, hobbies, and interests."

Employees need downtime. It's important for companies to respect their employees' lives outside of work hours and encourage a healthy work-life balance.
