Introducing the team behind Social Hardware's Eclipse, focused on advancing safety and efficiency in hazardous environments.

Bengaluru, India - 12th November, 2024 - Social Hardware has emerged from nearly two years of development to unveil its highly anticipated XR-controlled telerobotics system, Eclipse. Designed for hazardous environments, Eclipse redefines how high-risk tasks are approached, allowing operators to manage complex missions with ease and precision-all while staying at a safe distance.

Social Hardware's Eclipse Remote Systems are designed to address the critical need for remotely operated systems in environments too dangerous for human intervention. These robots are engineered for precision tasks such as CBRNE disposal-which encompasses chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosives-search and rescue missions, and hazardous industrial operations where safety is paramount.

Thousands of workers in India risk their lives by processing approximately 4.4 million tons of hazardous waste annually. This waste often contains toxic substances such as lead, mercury, and cyanide. Those exposed to these dangerous chemicals may face life-threatening illnesses, including cancer, neurological disorders, and respiratory diseases.

"We developed the Eclipse series to take human operators out of harm's way," said Raghavendran Arunachalam, Chief Technology Officer of Social Hardware. "Our robots are equipped with the latest in XR and mesh networking technologies, allowing operators to perform delicate and dangerous tasks remotely, without compromising on precision or control."

Key Features of the Eclipse Series:

- Immersive Extended Reality (XR) Control: Operators control the Eclipse Series robots using an extended reality interface, providing an immersive, real-time experience. This level of control allows for unparalleled precision, making it ideal for high-stakes missions where every action counts.

- Modular Tool Attachments: The Eclipse Series robots come equipped with modular tool systems, allowing for quick adaptation to specific mission needs. From disarming explosives to cutting through debris, these robots are versatile and ready for a wide range of applications.

- Mesh Network Communication: The Eclipse Series uses advanced mesh networking technology, which enables operators to control the robots without needing a direct line of sight. This ensures reliable communication in obstructed or confined environments, such as collapsed buildings or underground tunnels, where traditional methods might fail.

Transforming Safety with Teleoperated Systems

In January 2024, a tragic hazardous waste incident occurred at an industrial facility in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, resulting in the deaths of two workers and injuries to several others. The incident, which involved the mishandling of toxic materials, prompted the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to take immediate action, ordering the closure of the factory involved. This case highlighted the serious risks faced by workers in industries dealing with hazardous materials, underscoring the urgent need for improved safety protocols and technologies.

Incidents like this are far too common in sectors where employees are exposed to dangerous environments, and they often result from insufficient safety measures or a lack of real-time monitoring. The Kalaburagi incident is just one example of how critical it is to adopt advanced solutions that not only reduce human exposure to hazardous conditions but also enable faster response to potential threats.

"Safety is at the heart of our work," said Raghavendran Arunachalam, Chief Technology Officer at Social Hardware. "We're not just offering a product; we're delivering a solution designed to protect lives. Our focus is on ensuring that those who face dangerous situations can return home safely."

Addressing AI Job Displacement through Telerobotics

As AI continues to reshape the workforce, concerns about job displacement have become increasingly prevalent. Telerobotics offers a promising solution by creating new roles that complement AI technologies. Here's how it can help:

Job Creation: The deployment of telerobotics systems like Eclipse requires skilled operators to manage and maintain these advanced technologies. This creates opportunities for training and employment in areas such as robotics control, programming, and maintenance.

Augmentation, Not Replacement: Telerobotics allows human workers to leverage AI capabilities while performing tasks that are too dangerous or complex to handle directly. This synergy can enhance productivity and safety, ensuring that human skills remain an integral part of the workforce.

Reskilling Opportunities: As industries adopt telerobotics, there will be a growing demand for training programs focused on new skill sets. Workers can transition into roles that involve overseeing robotic operations, thus securing their place in the evolving job market.

Enhanced Safety and Efficiency: By using telerobotics to manage hazardous operations, companies can not only protect their workers but also improve efficiency. This can lead to increased job stability in industries that are critical to national safety and security.

Looking Ahead: A Continued Focus on Innovation and Impact

Social Hardware is actively seeking industry partners to co-develop new models in the Eclipse Series-each crafted to address specialized needs in high-risk sectors.
"We're looking for partners who share our commitment to innovation and see the potential in teleoperated systems," says Abhit Kumar, Co-Founder and CEO of Social Hardware. "Together, we can engineer cutting-edge robots that integrate seamlessly into existing operations, delivering exceptional performance while meeting the highest regulatory and safety standards."

Social Hardware's vision is clear: to leverage these strategic collaborations to expand the Eclipse Series, enhancing both its capabilities and versatility to ensure it remains at the forefront of high-risk industry solutions.

"Join us in pioneering the next generation of robotics and be part of a movement that will transform industries and save lives. Together, we can create innovative, mission-driven robots that solve real-world problems and drive measurable impact."

Founded in 2017, Social Hardware first gained recognition for its work in developing affordable assistive devices for underserved communities. The company's commitment to inclusivity and social impact quickly set it apart, with a standout collaboration in 2021 with Cadbury Celebrations for the #MyFirstRakhi campaign. This initiative provided children with upper limb differences specially designed prosthetics, allowing them to fully participate in the Raksha Bandhan tradition. The campaign garnered widespread attention, reaching 2.7 crore views on YouTube, and was praised for promoting inclusivity in cultural practices, marking a significant step in making assistive technology more accessible and integrated into cultural traditions in India.

Building on this success, Social Hardware expanded its mission to develop technology that protects and enhances human lives. The Eclipse series marks the culmination of years of research and development, moving beyond assistive devices into the field of teleoperated robotics, driven by the same core value of improving human lives through innovation.
