Apparels ignite and burn when exposed to ignition sources such as electric arcs or flames. Everyday garments and furnishings continue to burn until the fire is extinguished or all flammable materials are consumed. Flame resistant fabrics are chemically engineered to resist ignition, prevent flames from spreading to the immediate area of high heat impingement and self-extinguish immediately upon removal of the ignition source. Most flame resistant fabrics are inherently flame resistant, treated flame resistant or blends. Inherently flame resistant fabrics possess flame resistant properties that are naturally part of the fibers. On the other hand, treated flame resistant fabrics are coated with flame resistant chemicals. Blends, also known as hybrids, are a combination of treated and inherently flame resistant fibers. MHP and Tecasafe are blends of different fibers and posses properties of synthetic and natural fibers. Flame resistant fabrics are manufactured from synthetic fibers or natural fibers. Synthetic fibers (polyester, aramid and acrylic) are derived from petroleum and natural fibers (wool, cotton and silk) that are obtained from plants and animals.

Flame resistant fabrics are used to manufacture apparels, garments and furnishings in a wide range of industries including oil and gas, transportation, healthcare, military and hospitality. Companies provide an array of flame resistant fabrics to maximize flexibility in design, engineering and cost, while meeting government regulations. Flame resistant fabrics are used to manufacture protective clothing for workers in oil and gas, and chemical industries and in law enforcement agencies. Industrial protective clothing is the major segment, which accounted for more than half of the global demand for flame resistant fabrics in 2013. Law enforcement and firefighting services is another key application segment of these fabrics. Flame resistant fabrics are used in uniforms for firefighting, military, navy and air force sectors. These fabrics are also used to manufacture internal upholstery, decorative tickings and components of mattresses in homes, hotels, ships and hospitals. Additionally, flame resistant fabrics are used to fabricate smoke and fire curtains, which are built into the ceiling and structure of commercial buildings and large warehouses.

The global flame resistant fabrics market has been segmented geographically into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Rest of the World. Rest of the World primarily includes the Middle East, Latin America and Africa. Europe was the largest market for flame resistant fabrics in 2013 and accounted for over 35% share of the global flame resistant fabrics market in the same year. This trend is likely to continue over the duration of the forecast period with Europe leading the global market in terms of demand. North America was the third-largest market for flame resistant fabrics. In terms of volume, the region is likely to expand at a CAGR of over 5% between 2014 and 2020. Asia Pacific, the second-largest consumer of flame resistant fabrics in 2013, showed tremendous growth in the industrial protective clothing market. This is likely to drive the flame resistant fabrics market in the region in the near future.
