Interview with Actress Annick Van Couwenberghe on Her Role in Dertigers

You play Agnes in the TV series Dertigers. Can you tell us about your character?
Agnes is a single mother with two sons, making ends meet by working as a cleaner at the local school. She begins an affair with the school principal, who's going through a divorce, so initially, they keep their relationship hidden. As things get more serious and their relationship becomes public, Agnes finds herself navigating the dynamics of a blended family, working hard to fit in and earn the trust of his daughters.

The show is now in its fourth season. What do you think is the secret behind Dertigers' success?
Technically, the series had four seasons with the original cast, followed by two aired seasons with the new cast (which I'm part of), with a third in post-production. So yes, the series has definitely proven to be a success! I think the key lies in its relatability-the show focuses on everyday people facing real-life situations that audiences connect with, though heightened just enough to make them more intense, whether it's sadder, funnier, or more dramatic. This relatability lets viewers root for the characters, judge them, or empathize as if they're sharing those experiences themselves. And, of course, the humor woven throughout is a huge part of what makes it special!

How was the dynamic with your fellow actors on set?
Fantastic! The main characters are close friends in the series, and working on set felt just like that-being among friends. We had a great time together, and even when the schedule was tight, everyone enjoyed being there. I've definitely made lasting connections with some amazing people on set.

You also starred in the short film Just Sophie - Mag ik nog even. Can you tell us about this project?
The film tells the story of a mother-a hardworking career woman-who has faced many recent struggles. She's used as a punching bag, both mentally and physically, by various aggressors, and a primal force drives her to take drastic measures to protect her child. I think every parent can relate to the instinct to protect their child from life's harsh realities. Just Sophie portrays a mother in an extreme situation who must make tough choices to keep her daughter safe. The film recently won Best European Film at a festival in Amsterdam, which is a huge honor for all of us who worked on it.

How did you approach acting in this film?
I trained in Method and Meisner techniques, but I recently began studying the Chubbuck Technique with Adam Davenport, and Just Sophie is the first project where I fully applied it. Chubbuck really resonated with me because not every technique feels natural or comfortable-each actor has to find what works best. This technique gave me the tools to portray characters and situations that are far removed from my own life. With Just Sophie, I needed a way to reach into a character who was facing challenges so different from my own. The Chubbuck Technique provided that bridge, helping me bring Sophie to life authentically.

Annick Van Couwenberghe has taken on a variety of roles across several projects, including popular TV series like Vloglab #Stories and Billie vs. Benjamin. Recently, she's appeared in episodes of Move On (new episodes are coming to VTMgo) and Dertigers, which airs on VRT1 and VRTMAX and has amassed millions of views online. She stars in the award-winning short film Mag ik nog even, directed by Tom Cineger and written by Noah Zayn Mortier, which premiered recently and will now tour festivals.

Her upcoming work includes co-writing a feature film script with a friend, as well as a project with an Italian-Swiss director and an actor friend. Annick is also taking online courses with acting coach Adam Davenport to deepen her industry knowledge and continue refining her acting skills.
