Maeva Ghonda Announced as Climate Change Speaker at Sierra Leone LCOY Conference
On this United Nations Day, 24 October 2024, a wave of youthful enthusiasm swept through the audience as Maëva Ghonda, Renowned Climate Change Expert, Scientist, Author, and Quantum AI Institute Chair, addressed the Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change (LCOY) in Sierra Leone taking place 23-25 October 2024. Her presentation served as a powerful call to action, galvanizing the young minds to become agents of change in the face of the climate emergency.Youth at the Forefront of Climate Action
LCOY, a precursor to the United Nations Climate Change Conference, i.e. the global Conference of Parties (COP), provides a vital platform for youth to converge, learn, and strategize on climate action. This year's conference, themed "Empowering Youth: Innovating for Climate Resilience and Global Peace," attracted several hundred participants in-person and virtually. This Sierra Leone conference served as a testament to the growing recognition of youth's critical role in driving climate action.
Maeva Ghonda's Stirring Address
Ghonda's presentation resonated deeply with the young audience. She illuminated how climate change acts as a threat multiplier, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities and potentially leading to conflict. She emphasized the interconnectedness of climate change and peacebuilding, underscoring the need for innovative solutions, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Quantum Computing to address both challenges.
A Call to Harness the Power of AI Quantum Innovations
Ghonda, a leading voice in the field of Climate Action, AI and Quantum Computing, captivated the audience with her insightful perspectives. In a powerful statement that echoed through the conference hall, she proclaimed, "We cannot be bystanders in the face of this global crisis. We must empower ourselves with knowledge, innovation, and steadfast determination to build a future where humanity and nature thrive in harmony."
Embracing the Power of Youth
LCOY served as a potent reminder that the fight for climate justice is a shared responsibility, and that empowering young people is paramount to achieving a sustainable and peaceful future. The decision to hold the first LCOY in Sierra Leone reflects the growing recognition of the country's vulnerability to climate change impacts and the urgent need to empower youth to become active participants in climate solutions.
