National Book Trust, India (NBT-India) under the Ministry of Education, Govt of India is the nodal body of the Government of India for the promotion of books and reading culture in India.
This year, NBT-India has partnered with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to elevate the Amdavad National Book Fair to the next level by organizing the first edition of the Ahmedabad International Book Festival (AIBF) at the Sabarmati Riverfront.
The Amdavad National Book Fair which was first organized by NBT-India and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation under the Vanche Gujarat mission in 2012 and was inaugurated by Shri Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, has achieved remarkable success, with eight successful editions organized since its inception.
The event is now evolving into the Ahmedabad International Book Festival, and NBT-India is proud to be a part of this transformation by starting the first international book festival outside Delhi. This transformation reflects the growing interest of world's scholars and publishing industry in the rise of Indian Languages and literature beyond Hindi and English as well as growth of regional publishing clusters in the vibrant economic areas like Gujarat.
The festival, taking place from November 30 to December 8, 2024, will feature over 100 literary sessions, children's activities like musical storytelling session, creative writing, theatre play, calligraphy workshop, orientation program on higher studies & career in civil services for young adults and more, as well as live events and a range of cultural performances. The festival will also provide a platform for young creative writers to engage with the World's best litterateurs.
With participation from more than 1,000 publishers, the festival will be held at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, providing an inspiring setting for intellectual and cultural exchange and engaging a diverse audience of book lovers and thought leaders.
Gujarat has preserved the stories of Bharat since time immemorial, from the fables engraved on earthenware in Dholavira, to the immemorial stories of Lord Shri Krishna in Dwarka; the land has inspired the world's literature. Gujarat's literary history spans centuries, during the medieval period, the works of Jain scholars in the 12th century and the Bhakti movement in the 15th and 16th centuries enriched Indian and Gujarati literature.
The state has also produced notable writers such as Umashankar Joshi, Pannabhai Patel, and K.M. Munshi. Additionally, Gujarat has been home to two of India's most influential leaders and philosophers of modern times, Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, whose legacies reflect on the state's deep intellectual and cultural ecosystem. The writings of Mahatma Gandhi, such as "My Experiments with Truth," have inspired countless individuals.
The presence of world-class institutions in the twin city of Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar, including IIM, IIT, NID, NIFT, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Defence University, Forensic Science University, and many major streams of education, provides impetus to intellectual discourses and wider participation of young bright minds from diverse fields during the upcoming edition of the Ahmedabad International Book Festival.
