Space-Based Solar Power Latest Industry Updates
On April 8, 2024: A first-of-its-kind lab demonstration was conducted by UK-based startup Space Solar to indicate solar power transmission in space using a special beaming device that can wirelessly transmit power 360 degrees around, and it has a steerable power beaming capability is the heart of the solar power satellite design. The 360-degree feature is expected to play a crucial role in future space-based power stations, to enable positioning toward the sun and Earth and to adjust to the rotation. Space Solar expects the CASSIOPeiA space-based solar power plant concept to be in space over the next 10 years and providing clean energy much mor efficiently than conventional solar plants and farms on Earth's surface.
January 3, 2023: California Institute of Technology (Caltech) announced successful launch of a space solar power prototype into orbit under its Space Solar Power Project (SSPP), and in June the prototype demonstrated ability to harvest power in space and to wirelessly transmit detectable power to Earth for the first time. The technology used is Microwave Array for Power-transfer Low-orbit Experiment (MAPLE), which is one of three technologies under testing in the space-borne prototype for wireless power harvesting and transmission to the surface of Earth by the Space Solar Power Demonstrator (SSPD-1).
