Sri Lanka Ambassador in Austria H.E. Mrs. Aruni Wijewardanein in support of UNIDO action "Waste to ElectricíEnergy" in Colombo

On occasion of a visit in the Sri Lanka Embassy in Vienna, WASME Delegates at UNIDO, Susanne Forstinger and Norbert Knoll-Dornhoff, presented to Ambassador H.E. Mrs. Aruni Wijewardane, their proposal to implement in Colombo under the patronage of UNIDO a demonstration plant for South Asien Countries for the production of electric energy from organic waste with the Austrian “Low Temperature Conversion Technology – LTC”. That proposal also includes the foundation of a UNIDO Information and Training Centre which should evaluate data and experience won by operating the LTC plant and subsequently disperse ithe findings to other South Asian Countries.

The joint initiative of Austria and Sri Lanka shall aim at the assistance of developing Countries to re-solve their organic waste problems in an economically and the same time environmentally healthy manner. Technology transfer thus provided shall Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in these Countries enable in the long run to qualify in waste management industry and finally produce the hardware for the plants on site.

The Austrian Federal Ministry for Economy and Work is currently investigating the possibility of a joint application of Austria with Sri Lanka at UNIDO to take the patronage over the Demo-Plant and the Info- and Training Centre. Mr. Gerhard Burian, Officer in Charge, informed the WASME Delegates about successful research and development, supported by the Ministry, in the field of biogas production from organic material. Closer co-operation with UNIDO and WASME in developing Countries would be highly desirable, said Mr. Burian.
