About the Author

Thomas Hoodis Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he dedicated 40 years to teaching and mentoring students in the fields of sociology and social theory. Over his distinguished career, he supervised nearly 100 Masters and Doctoral students and became known for his expertise in face-to-face communication, religious conversion, and cross-dressing. His leadership within the field is reflected in his roles as President and Secretary-Treasurer of the Southern Sociological Society, as well as his 19-year tenure as Executive Officer of the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

Hood's research reflects a deep engagement with the work of Erving Goffman, particularly on the themes of identity and social interaction. He continues to write on social life and is currently researching the 4-H Clubs of America, an organization rooted in community development and education. His contributions to the study of social behavior, coupled with his commitment to mentoring future generations of sociologists, make him a respected figure in the academic world.
