Revolutionising Dementia Care: Psychology World and Dementia India Alliance Unveil New Training Course
Revolutionising Dementia Care: Psychology World and Dementia India Alliance Unveil New Training CourseAs India faces a growing dementia crisis, Psychology World and the Dementia India Alliance (DIA) have joined forces to launch a new Dementia Orientation Certificate Course designed specifically for healthcare workers. The course, introduced on World Mental Health Day, aims to address the dual challenges of providing quality care for dementia patients and supporting the mental health of caregivers, including nurses, physiotherapists, and allied healthcare professionals.
With over 88 lakh individuals currently living with dementia in India-and projections indicating that number could rise to 1.7 crore by 2036-the need for well-trained healthcare professionals has never been more urgent. This initiative seeks to empower caregivers with the practical knowledge and emotional resilience required to manage the complexities of dementia care, while also safeguarding their own mental well-being.
"Dementia care is not only about medical treatment, but also about understanding the emotional needs of patients and caregivers alike," said Dr. Radha S. Murthy, President of Dementia India Alliance. "This course is a vital resource for healthcare workers who often face immense pressure without adequate training or mental health support."
The Dementia Orientation Certificate Course, available online and self-paced, is tailored to the unique cultural context of India, where caregiving dynamics often differ from global norms. By offering culturally relevant training, Psychology World ensures that participants are well-equipped to handle difficult behavioral symptoms such as confusion, aggression, and wandering. The course is accredited by ODLQC (UK), providing an internationally recognized certification.
"Our goal is to not only enhance the quality of care for dementia patients but also to shine a spotlight on the often-overlooked mental health needs of healthcare workers," said Shabd Mishra, Founder of Psychology World. "This course is flexible and accessible, allowing busy professionals to learn at their own pace while gaining the skills needed to provide compassionate, effective care."
The launch of the Dementia Orientation Certificate Course coincides with World Mental Health Day, reinforcing the need to prioritize mental health for caregivers who experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout. By addressing these needs, this course plays a critical role in enhancing both patient outcomes and the well-being of healthcare professionals.
