It’s been three and a half years since the “story-focused” agency first set up shop in a small, ceiling-less white box around the corner. “We built our space ‘one thing at a time,’” says EA managing Partner Mason Poe. “One week, a conference room. The next, kitchen. Last winter, a wood burning stove. It’s been exciting—and we learned a lot.”
Unsurprisingly, the thrill of discovery is also what fuels Edgar Allan’s entire multidisciplinary team of writers, designers, responsive web gurus and strategists. Last year, the EA crew threw a series of Wednesday evening mystery shindigs dubbed “The Ever So Much More So” (after a children’s story in which a huckster sells powder that makes everything “just that much better”). The idea wasn’t just an excuse to party: the events were aimed at creating what Poe calls hoopla—experiences people want to talk about. This year, they employed the concept to build a mattress company from the ground up, from naming to brand to seeing the Loblolly featured in the top-rated Airbnb in the world. In the coming weeks, they’ll hold an end-of-summer crawfish boil for family and favorite clients, begin a responsive web design class at Atlanta’s Switchyards Downtown Club, and launch a new website for both a Coca-Cola affiliated youth development nonprofit and themselves, at www.edgarallan.com.
