Generally, the environmental impact of coolants is measured by ozone depletion potential (ODP), global warming potential (GWP), and pollution to soil and groundwater.



ODP describes the ability of a substance to destroy stratospheric ozone, and GWP is used to indicate the magnitude of a substance's impact on global warming. The smaller the ODP and GWP values, the smaller the negative impact of the coolant on the environment. Hydrocarbon and silicone coolants have very low ODP and GWP, and the environmental impact of fluorocarbon coolants is more prominent. With the global emphasis on environmental protection, fluorocarbon coolants with higher ODP have been eliminated, and most products currently in use have an ODP of zero. GWP indicators vary. For example, PFC has strong stability, a long life in the atmosphere, and a GWP value of thousands, while HFE has a lower GWP value in the hundreds. Fluorocarbon liquids should always be used in sealed systems to ensure that they are released into the atmosphere as little as possible.



In terms of soil and groundwater pollution, hydrocarbon and silicone coolants have low evaporation capacity. If they leak in large quantities, they will cause soil or groundwater pollution. Although most synthetic oils are classified as biodegradable, leaks also need to be controlled and cleaned up in a timely manner. At the time of scrapping, all coolants should be treated or recycled, and disposed of in strict accordance with local environmental laws and regulations, management obligations and guidelines in MSDS.



In order to reduce the consumption of high-GWP fluorinated liquids, some governments in the EU have taken measures such as GWP weighted taxes and GWP restrictions for specific applications. EU regulations stipulate that equipment containing fluorinated liquids should be regularly checked for leaks to prevent them from being released into the atmosphere, and liquids with higher GWP values require more frequent leak checks. Therefore, in order to reduce the difficulty of later maintenance, data centers should give priority to coolants that do not require or only require minimal regulatory restrictions (environmentally friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable, etc.).
