Musicians gain global audience by giving music away for free.

A growing number of musicians are getting international exposure by releasing their music for free. Minneapolis music composition and licensing group Twin Musicom are having their music heard by millions of people via Youtube, Facebook, podcasts, and Social Media by releasing it under the Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licensing is part of a growing movement which allows for greater artistic creativity, collaboration, and innovation.

In the last 10 years, the number of creative commons licensed works has increased from 140 Million to 1.1 Billion. This movement, which allows regular people to utilize music which has been used in some of the most viewed and loved videos on the planet, signals a significant shift in the way musicians and other artists share and monetize their work. So much so, that a documentary film was recently Kickstarted (in 2015) to showcase this movement, and to highlight some of the key players in the free music world (titled “Royalty Free: The music of Kevin Macleod”).

Twin Musicom is a music composition, production, and licensing company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA (more info at http://www.twinmusicom.org/about). The three members are a mix of classically trained and self-taught musicians. After spending time performing in the local music scene they yearned for a broader audience for their music. They turned their attention to creative commons music and have been working together to create music for Twin Musicom for over two years. Their music being featured in the YouTube Audio Library has resulted in millions of plays all around the world.
