New mothers at risk and urged to monitor blood pressure

Press release from: Midland Health

The birth of a child is a joyous occasion, bringing excitement but also the challenges of caring for a newborn. Along with the sleepless nights and endless responsibilities, new mothers often prioritise their baby's well-being while neglecting their own health. However, one important aspect of postpartum care that should not be overlooked is the monitoring of blood pressure. Postpartum hypertension, or high blood pressure after childbirth, is a serious condition that can lead to significant health complications if not properly managed.

As we observe Know Your Numbers Week, a national campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of knowing your key health numbers, it's an opportune time to remind new mothers of the vital role blood pressure plays in their overall health. While conditions like pre-eclampsia are well-known risks during pregnancy, many women mistakenly believe that the danger subsides once the baby is born. However, the postpartum period-often referred to as the "fourth trimester"-is a critical time for monitoring a mother's health, including her blood pressure.

Dr. Rupa Parmar, Private GP and Medical Director of Midland Health, is emphasising the importance of continued vigilance during this period. "The risks associated with pregnancy-related hypertension don't end with childbirth. New mothers need to be aware of the possibility of postpartum hypertension and take steps to monitor their blood pressure regularly," she advises.

Postpartum hypertension can present in various ways. Some women may develop high blood pressure for the first time after giving birth, while others may see pre-existing hypertension persist or worsen. The physical and emotional stresses of motherhood, combined with the body's recovery from childbirth, can exacerbate this condition. Risk factors include a history of hypertension, obesity, or preeclampsia during pregnancy.

The consequences of ignoring high blood pressure in the postpartum period can be severe. Untreated postpartum hypertension can lead to life-threatening complications such as stroke, heart disease, and organ damage. A stroke, in particular, is a major concern for women whose blood pressure spikes to dangerously high levels. Additionally, the increased strain on the heart can lead to long-term cardiovascular issues, while unmanaged blood pressure can cause lasting damage to vital organs like the kidneys and liver.

Dr. Parmar recommends that new mothers monitor their blood pressure regularly, even after leaving the hospital. "Home blood pressure monitors are widely available and easy to use, making it simple for mothers to keep track of their numbers," she says. Recognising the signs of hypertension, such as severe headaches, visual disturbances, or swelling, and seeking medical attention promptly if these symptoms occur, is crucial for early intervention.

In addition to regular monitoring, new mothers should adopt a healthy lifestyle to help manage their blood pressure. Staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and incorporating gentle physical activity when appropriate can all contribute to better blood pressure control. Dr. Parmar emphasises that these lifestyle measures should complement regular blood pressure checks and consultations with a healthcare provider.

Stress management is also vital during the postpartum period. The emotional and psychological demands of caring for a newborn can be overwhelming, and chronic stress can negatively impact blood pressure. Dr. Parmar encourages new mothers to seek support from family, friends, or postpartum support groups to manage stress effectively and maintain overall well-being.

As we observe Know Your Numbers Week, the message is clear: understanding and monitoring your key health numbers, including blood pressure, is crucial for long-term health. For new mothers, this awareness is especially important. While the excitement of caring for a newborn can easily consume time and energy, it is essential to remember that a healthy mother is the cornerstone of a healthy family. By monitoring blood pressure during the postpartum period, new mothers can prevent serious health complications and ensure a safer, healthier recovery.

In the words of Dr. Parmar, "Your health is just as important as your baby's. By staying vigilant and proactive about your blood pressure, you're not only protecting yourself but also ensuring you're there for your child in the long run." This Know Your Numbers Week, take the time to prioritise your health-it's a step that could save your life.
