Australian Trailblazer Agili8 Partners with NASDAQ-listed

Breakthrough company transforming the way humans see, learn and work with XRAI Vision.
Agili8 [https://agili8.com/], an Australian medtech trailblazer specializing in extended reality, artificial intelligence and computer vision has achieved a significant milestone with Vuzix Corporation [https://www.vuzix.com/], a global NASDAQ listed company with 375 patents in the fields of optics, head-mounted displays, and augmented reality smart glasses for government, enterprise and consumer sectors.

Partnering with Vuzix enables Agili8 to empower lone frontliners in regional, rural and remote areas to work handsfree with voice commands, while being guided by metro specialists with 3D "virtual hands-on" assistance, where their live hands and tools can appear on a patient's wound in real time through the smart glasses, despite being far away for precision medicine.

Its revolutionary XRAI Vision Registered solution effectively reduces expertise gaps, adverse events, travel, costs and carbon footprint, saving lives while empowering frontliners with prompt decision-making. This is particularly impactful in Indigenous, remote and underserved areas where access to medical expertise and timely treatment are impossible due to the tyranny of distance and lack of infrastructure, contributing to higher mortality and morbidity rates

Life & cost saving outcomes in the $5M Challenge

Agili8 is one of 9 finalists out of 100 global contestants in the 12-month long Western Australian Government $5M Challenge, to prove the best virtual care solution to close the gaps in health inequity for Indigenous and remote communities.

During the trials, XRAI Vision Registered saved a diabetic foot participant from potential amputation and hospitalization with immediate intervention provided by the wound care nurses, Asenca Steele and Robyn Winkler, led by Agili8's clinical lead Dr Chris Peyton, Acting Senior Medical Officer at the remote Hedland Health Campus, together with virtual experts, Dr Olufemi Oshin, vascular consultant-surgeon, and Ms Cara Westphal, Head of Podiatry from the Royal Perth Hospital based in the city.

Without this prompt intervention, it would have cost the WA health system an estimated $64,554 to provide amputation surgery, hospitalization, patient transfers by aeromedical flights and rehabilitation based on the Australian National Subacute and Non-Acute Patient Classification for this particular diagnosis and minimum rehabilitation of 14 days.

Foot disease is one of the most expensive acute complications of diabetes. Estimated direct costs to the Australian public hospital system and overall health system have been reported to be AUD$348 million and AUD$1.57 billion respectively. In the United States (US), the direct annual costs for diabetes management is estimated at USD$237 billion, where one third is attributable to diabetic foot disease.Lower limb amputation is often associated with a high risk of not surviving within the first year with 30 days and 1-year mortality at 30% and 54% respectively.

Disruptive innovator making waves of change

Agili8 holds multiple state, national and global awards for artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, innovation, leadership, Tech for Good as well as for Health, Wellbeing & Care Economy. It is also in the running for Australia's Most Innovative Startup 2024 in the Startup Daily Best-in-Tech Awards this September. This year, its founder and CEO, Esther Oh has been awarded the Most Influential CEO 2024 in Healthcare XR Technology by global CEO Monthly magazine, placing Australia at the forefront of deep technologies involving extended reality, artificial intelligence and computer vision.

The company has been featured nationally as disrupting the way virtual care is delivered in remote underserved areas on Channel 9's Innovation Nation TV. The Royal Flying Doctors Service recently highlighted their strategic partnership with Agili8 to solve critical demand and supply issues in remote healthcare on Business News.

Such recognition does not come easy. For several years, Agili8 has been co-designing and testing this multidisciplinary virtual model of care with the most disadvantaged remote Aboriginal communities affected by natural disasters under the harshest conditions, including performing telehealth trials under 45 degree Celsius heat in the remote Western Desert. This robust solution is now ready to launch nationally and globally.

Partnership of global significance

CEO, Esther Oh elaborated on this technological collaboration:

"We have rigorously tested many smart glasses from all over the world and found that Vuzix is the most versatile and practical device for frontline and remote workforces. The Blade is so easy to use and the M-series are Certified Medical devices with EMC and ISO14644 cleanroom ratings. These are the lightest, ruggedized smart glasses in the market that balances comfort and performance for many practical applications beyond healthcare."

"Supporting professionals in the field with see-what-I-see virtual assist is one of the most powerful applications of smart glasses," said Paul Travers, President and CEO of Vuzix. "Over the years, this technology has been reshaping how healthcare is delivered, opening up exciting and life-saving new opportunities for underserved communities and caregivers alike. We're proud to support Agili8's work to improve healthcare accessibility."

This groundbreaking solution is embraced by patients, frontliners and medical experts as a powerful key enabler to disrupt healthcare and emergency rescues in significant ways, which attracted the attention of multiple nations defense forces. For instance, it enables Australian clinicians to support allied troops in times of war, disasters and pandemics without sending them to the frontline, transforming the way virtual care is delivered while rapidly upskilling, protecting and retaining a highly skilled and resilient workforce. It also enables remote troubleshooting of equipment on-the-spot without having to wait for experts to travel to remote sites to resolve issues.

This partnership is of global significance, protecting sovereign capabilities across space, air, land and sea. It also augments Australia and US joint operational capabilities in the AUKUS mission to improve injured soldiers' survival rates and uphold peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
