EU Changes Food Contact Plastics Regulations
Modifications include:
• Amending and expanding the list of authorised substances
• Assigning food simulants for migration tests for ‘fresh or chilled fruit’ and ‘fresh or chilled vegetables’ (Annex III, point 3, Table 2 ‘Food category specific assignment of food simulants’)
• Expanding the list of heavy metals to include aluminium for specific migration
• Providing a new definition for ‘hot-fill’
• Selecting simulants, and conditions for temperature and time
• Strengthening the specific migration of zinc
Regulation (EU) 2016/1416 will become effective on September 14, 2016, with the exception of the provisions pertaining to migration limits for aluminium and zinc, and the assigning of food simulants for migration tests for ‘fresh or chilled fruit’ and ‘fresh or chilled vegetables’. These will become effective on September 14, 2018.
The new regulation includes a provision for the continued sale of food contact plastics complying with (EU) 10/2011. According to the amendment, these can still be placed in the market until September 14, 2017 and may remain on the market until stocks are exhausted.
