NCI, Inc. (Formerly North Central Instruments) Pursues Growth Through Diversification

Representatives of NCI Inc., a distributor of scientific instrumentation, announced they have acquired Kruge Air, a Twin Cities-based distributor of major air compressor brands. The acquisition represents the latest move in NCI’s plans to diversify its current base of business. Founded in 1967 as a distributor of microscopes for hospitals, the company is a leading distributor of equipment for microscopy and histology.

“NCI has always excelled in delivering exceptional value for our core business. When we looked to the future it was clear, however, the company would need to diversify to continue growing,” said Brad Johnson, CEO of NCI for the past fifteen years and an employee of the organization since 1996. “Our strategy is to acquire strong organizations who share a similar customer base. As we grow and diversify, we’ll take our established model for sales, service and distribution and apply it to each newly created business unit. Our latest acquisition is just one more step toward accomplishing our objective of becoming the dominant distributor in our market space.” Johnson added the goal of the company is to double the size of each business post-acquisition within five years.

NCI completed its acquisition of Kruge Air on August 15th, 2016. In April of this year, NCI also acquired Unique Tool, a tooling company based in Hutchinson, Minnesota. The company has been assisted in its merger and acquisition activities by Twin Cities-based business brokerage Sunbelt Business Advisors. “When an organization has such a strong vision for growth, our job becomes much easier,” said Chris Jones, Managing Partner for Sunbelt. “NCI has the advantage of being an ESOP-managed company, combined with leadership that has a razor-sharp focus on its goals. NCI operates under an ESOP, or Employee Stock Ownership Plan. CEO Johnson reports that post-acquisition turnover has been extremely low.
