Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute (www.ppgjli.org) proudly announces the revitalization of its celebrated Sankofa trips, with a profound journey back to Ghana in 2024. This initiative marks a significant endeavor to reconnect individuals with their African roots and heritage, embodying the Sankofa philosophy of reaching back to the past for knowledge, cultural identity, and pride.

The 2024 Sankofa trip, organized by Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute (PPGJLI), served as a pivotal moment for cultural reconnection and education. With a mission grounded in promoting literacy and planting seeds of social change, PPGJLI facilitated a comprehensive and immersive experience for participants, including current and emerging cultural bearers from the Greater Twin Cities Metro area and beyond.

Among the esteemed participants were Reverend Carl Walker and Grant West, co-founders of the Walker West Music Academy. Founded in 1988, Walker West Music Academy stands as the oldest Black-founded music education institution in the United States. As influential cultural bearers, Walker and West have profoundly impacted African American music education, mentoring thousands of musicians across the Twin Cities. Their presence on the Sankofa trip was integral, as they provided invaluable wisdom and leadership, fostering growth and development among the youth and sharing their extensive knowledge with African communities.

The ten-day journey spanned multiple cities, including Accra, Senchi Ferry, and Cape Coast, offering participants a deep dive into African history, culture, and arts. Notably, the group visited significant historical sites such as the forts and slave castles of Cape Coast and Elmina. These visits offered a poignant reminder of the resilience and strength of their ancestors. The group also had the honor of meeting Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, King of the Akwamu Kingdom, further solidifying their connection to authentic African heritage.

Educational efforts were at the forefront of the trip, particularly the involvement with the Senchi Community Learning Center. The group actively participated in educational initiatives, highlighting the importance of literacy and the promotion of historical knowledge. In line with PPGJLI's commitment to fostering future leaders, participants visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum. Here, they learned about Nkrumah's pivotal role in Ghana's development and modernization. The group also toured the home of Dr. W. E. B. Dubois, grasping his lifelong dedication to improving education for people of African descent and his tireless work toward social justice.

In addition to these educational endeavors, the trip facilitated cultural appreciation and economic support. The group visited the Aburi Artist Market, where they engaged with local artisans and supported the economy. They experienced various cultural practices, including the Last Bath, a harmonious cleansing ceremony honoring the spirits of ancestors.

By collecting and delivering school supplies to support the King's educational reforms and the children at the Senchi Community Learning Center, PPGJLI sought to make a tangible impact on both the participants and the wider community. This aligns with PPGJLI's broader mission to inspire social change and nurture future leaders through the lens of cultural heritage and historical awareness.

Future Sankofa trips promise even more transformative experiences. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit https://www.ppgjli.org/ and sign up for their newsletter to stay updated on upcoming journeys to Africa.
