With the growing population and number of vehicles on the road, traffic management is a large field that faces several issues. For successful management, the volume of data exchanged via Wi-Fi on the street is neither sufficient nor secure. VLC has a strong future in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, in addition to traffic management. LEDs are being used to replace most automotive headlights and taillights. These LEDs can be transformed by VLC for car-to-car communication. This aspect can support anti-collision systems and the interchange of various types of data between cars. Due to the usage of LED illumination in traffic lights, it is becoming a viable option in citywide traffic management systems, such as pedestrian signals and traffic signals that employ VLC. For instance, street lights that communicate with a pedestrian's VLC-enabled smartphone can control car traffic and allow pedestrians to cross a street.
VLC technology in traffic systems allows drivers to connect and create information from traffic lighting systems through smart devices or car headlights. Using tail lights, this information can also be communicated to other cars. This technology can be used to send information such as traffic updates, the quickest estimated time of arrival to a given area (including traffic congestion), or even internet access. Drivers may, however, use smart devices while driving, posing difficulty. The optimal solution to this problem is to embed a visible communication system within the vehicle and communicate information using the car's headlights. However, noise may reduce the efficiency of these intelligent traffic systems, lowering the adoption rate of VLC systems.
