Jay Bloom Leads Charge for Judicial Reform in Nevada

Jay Bloom is a Las Vegas entrepreneur who has had enough of the status quo.

Bloom recently announced the launch of Nevadans for Judicial Accountability and Review (NJAR), a Political Action Committee (PAC) dedicated to reforming Nevada's judiciary. With an initial war chest of $3 million and a goal to raise at least $10 million over the next two years, NJAR is poised to make some serious waves.

"Nearly every Nevada resident and business will encounter the judiciary at some point in their lives," Bloom said in a statement. "While most jurists have good intentions, some lose their way or were never qualified in the first place, and can ruin many Nevadans' lives and businesses with a rampage of capricious and unjustifiable decisions."

It's a sentiment echoed by many in the business community. In fact, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has consistently ranked Nevada's courts among the most anti-business in the nation. A recent survey by the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform placed Nevada's lawsuit climate at a dismal 37th in the country, with particularly low marks for trial judge impartiality and competence.

But it's not just businesses that suffer from a dysfunctional judiciary. Bloom and his team at NJAR have heard countless stories of everyday Nevadans whose lives have been upended by arbitrary and capricious rulings. With limited options for holding judges accountable between elections every six years, many are forced to simply endure the consequences.

So what does NJAR plan to do about it? For starters, they'll be working with legislators, legal experts, and community leaders to identify areas for improvement and propose solutions. They'll also be engaging in public education campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary.

But perhaps most importantly, NJAR will be putting its money where its mouth is. The PAC plans to financially support qualified judicial candidates while actively challenging problematic incumbents. By looking at neutral metrics like preemption numbers and reversal rates, they hope to identify those judges who are simply not cutting it.

Of course reforming an entire branch of government is no small task. But with the backing of heavy hitters like Bloom and a growing chorus of frustrated Nevadans, NJAR seems poised to make a real difference. And in a state where the judiciary touches so many aspects of our lives, that's something we can all get behind.
