Press release from: Singhania Clinic

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, August 4, 2016: If a child has cow milk intolerance the immune system reacts abnormally to the protein found in cow's milk. The reaction can cause injury to the child’s intestines and stomach. If a parent or sibling has an allergic or atopic disease they are more at risk for developing CMPI (Cow's milk protein intolerance).

CMPI can occur in two forms, the first being an immediate reaction. This form appears within 2 hours of drinking cow milk. The second is a delayed reaction, the reaction can take anywhere from 48 hours to one week. Signs of intolerance can be very diverse. A child can show signs of vomiting, blood in the stools, face swelling, eczema, skin manifestations and abdominal pain. Babies may present the intolerance by wheezing, irritability and poor growth.

A parent should go to the Dr as soon as the child shows symptoms or vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss or fever. To treat the intolerance, parents should cut out all cow milk products from the child’s diet, if the child is being breast fed and has CMPI, the mother should also cut cow’s milk from their diet for the duration of breastfeeding.

Dr. Singhania says, “I see many babies and toddlers suffering needlessly because of Cow Milk Protein Allergy or Intolerance. Many babies with colic or reflux, constipation or just irritability may have CMPI. Parents forget that all formula milk is made from cow milk. Also they may confuse lactose intolerance with CMPI and wrongly believe that giving lactose free formula will suffice. Breastfeeding is the best for babies. Iron deficiency anaemia and habitual constipation are also common manifestations in toddlers.”
