The Wellness Team an Aspley Physiotherapy has started strength, conditioning and balance training exercises for retirees.

Only a decade ago it would be rare to see pensioners put on yoga pants, gym shoes and work up a sweat, but now that's becoming a more common site in Aspley, Brisbane. While the classes are modified for each of the patients, they generally incorporate components of strength training, balance training and Pilates exercises. The gym is complete with a lifting platform and power rack where it's common to see 70 and 80 year olds squatting and deadlifting. If the gym equipment is too intimidating to start the patients often start on the more gentle Pilates reformer or Cadillac and work their way up to weights as their confidence grows.

Strength training has been shown to improve strength in the aging population where increases in leg strength have been correlated to decreased mortality. Strength training has also been shown to help maintain bone density and fitness training is also great for cardiovascular fitness, something that pays dividends during the flu season.
