Until economies of scale can bring down manufacturing costs, PCFC systems will struggle to compete financially with established technologies in high volume commercial applications.
Growing Interest in Power-to-Gas Applications Presents Commercialization Opportunity:
With increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources, efficient storage of renewable power in the form of hydrogen is seen as critically important. PCFCs' high reversibility and ability to perform both fuel cell and electrolysis functions within the same unit cell makes them well suited for power-to-gas applications. Several pilot projects exploring the integration of PCFC systems for utility scale power-to-gas are currently underway. If initial techno-economic outlooks pan out, the ability to facilitate bulk energy storage could represent PCFC's path to initial commercial scale deployment and provide learning to drive down costs for other target markets.

To date, PCFC fabrication has primarily been limited to lab scale. Moving technology beyond the prototype phase necessitates further scale-up of manufacturing methods and processes. Advanced thin film deposition, coating and co-sintering techniques need wider implementation in industry. Larger autoclave sintering furnaces, tape casting lines and other mass production equipment also need establishing. Early partnerships with cell/stack manufacturers can help progress manufacturing learning curves. With successful scale-demonstrations, per-unit production costs could fall significantly to enable broader market competitiveness in line with PCFC's operational advantages.
