France Publishes New Recommendations for Food Contact Materials
Replacing Information Notice No. 2004-64, dated May 6, 2004, these new documents each relate to a different form of FCM:
• DM/4B/COM/002 - FCM made from inorganic materials, excluding metals
• DM/4B/COM/003 - FCM made from organic materials made from synthetic fibers
• DM/4B/COM/004 - FCM made from organic materials made from plant fibers
In the main, these documents contain no technical changes from previous regulations, with the exception of the updating of references. In the case of DM/4B/COM/003, French decree 9/11/1994 is still valid for rubber and European Regulation (EC) No 10/2011 is applicable to plastics and plastic layers in complex materials.
Document DM/4B/COM/002 does, however, include new recommendations relating to metal release limits and migration testing conditions for Aluminium, Cobalt and Arsenic. Focusing on ceramics, glass, glass-ceramic and enamel, this document also includes definitions for cooking articles.
The new documentation has also removed an exemption for tablecloths, meaning these products are now considered FCM regardless of their materials.
Manufacturers are advised to review the new documentation in order to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
