EU Standards for Juvenile Products

In 2015, there were a number of updates to the standards governing juvenile products. These included updates to standards governing modes of juvenile transport, as well as for child use and care articles. Here’s a summary:

Transport
• Rain covers (NF S54-043: 2015)
• Soft baby carriers (EN 13209-2: 2015)

General
• Child use and care articles
o Part 1 – Safety philosophy and safety assessment (CEN TR13387-1: 2015)
o Part 2 – Chemical hazards (CEN TR13387-2: 2015)
o Part 3 – Mechanical hazards (CEN TR13387-3: 2015)
o Part 4 – Thermal hazards (CEN TR13387-4: 2015)
o Part 5 – Product information (CEN TR13387-5: 2015)

Bearing in mind that the effective dates will vary, product design, planning and production should take these changes into account in good time to ensure compliance.

Updates due in 2016
SGS expects the following list of standards to be published in 2016 or early 2017 (although precise dates are not yet available):

Sleeping
• Children’s cots and folding cots for domestic use (currently EN 716 Parts 1&2 +A1:2013)
• Cribs and cradles for domestic use (currently EN 1130 Parts 1&2:1996)
• Children’s sleep bags (DRAFT PrEN 16781)
• Cot bumpers (DRAFT PrEN 16780)
• Duvets for children’s cots (DRAFT PrEN 16779)
• Mattresses for children (DRAFT PrEN16890)
Seating
• Children’s high chairs (currently EN 14988 Parts 1&2:2006 Amendment A1:2012)
• Table-mounted seats (currently EN 1272:1998)
• Booster seats – chair-mounted seats (currently EN 16120 +A1:2014)
• Children’s chairs (currently NF D60-300-1&2)
Cleaning and Hygiene
• Domestic and kitchen storage units and worktops (applicable to changing units when used as a dresser) (just published EN 14749:2016)
Transport
• Wheeled child conveyances (currently EN 1888:2012)
