The global liposome in cosmetics market is anticipated to grow at a considerable CAGR of 4.9% during the forecast period. Liposomes are tiny sphere-shaped bubbles consisting of one or more phospholipid bilayers, made out of the same material as a cell membrane. In cosmetic formulations they are used as a delivery system, carrying active ingredients present in cosmetic products, to the deeper layers of the epidermis. The growing focus of consumers on health and appearance is creating an increasing demand for functional cosmetic ingredients and efficient delivery systems to supply the active ingredients deeper into the skin effectively. The delivery of active ingredients directly into the skin is one of the biggest challenges in skin care. This challenge has led to the development of liposomes in cosmetics. 

A liposome is an effective tool to assist the skin to absorb active cosmetic ingredients. It improves the stability of active ingredients, increases skin hydration by surface adhesiveness, enhances dermal bioavailability and skin targeting, and protects skin cells from external stressors, such as sun or sweat. These properties of liposomes have been increasingly used in cosmetic products such as moisturizers, hair shampoos, creams, lotions, and others. Thus, the key market players are actively utilizing the properties of liposomes as delivery systems enabling deeper penetration of active ingredients into the skin. For instance, in December 2021, Japanese Cosmetics Company KOSÉ launched a refreshed DECORTÉ Liposome Serum. The new serum was launched in the Japanese domestic market leveraging liposome technology in skincare for a long-lasting moisturizing effect. The new clean and vegan Liposome Serum is made with a higher concentration of multi-lamellar bio-liposome participles. These ultra-fine capsules (roughly 1/10,000mm in size) are made with phospholipids, a powerful bio-composition component. Like an onion, the serum contains multiple-overlapping layers and holds an abundance of active ingredients, containing one trillion bio-liposomes in a single drop.
