Muscle & Joint Clinic Celebrates National Awareness Month for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) by Highlighting Treatment Options

Advances in care enable EDS patients to live with less pain, increased function, and enhanced mobility
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - May 8, 2024 - Muscle & Joint Clinic, winners of the international Center of Clinical Excellence award, are experts in relieving pain and restoring function. Muscle & Joint Clinic wants to bring awareness of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) to help the EDS Society celebrate the month of May as EDS National Awareness Month. EDS is a disorder that weakens the connective tissue in the body. Although symptoms greatly vary in how it affects the body, the most common are loose joints and hypermobility. EDS frequently affects digestion, the blood-brain barrier, and the immune system, as they are all connective tissue-based. Dr. Derik Anderson, Clinic Director of Muscle & Joint Clinic, has been treating EDS patients for the past 10 years. He is an EDS research grant recipient, an EDS Society Pain Management Committee member, and longtime collaborator with the EDS society. "We wanted to bring more public attention to EDS," said Dr. Anderson. "That's why we are sharing our insights into modes of care this May, which is EDS National Awareness Month."

He added, "Although EDS is classified as a rare disease, it affects hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Indeed, almost 20% of the population has some level of hypermobility. We want to help people struggling with the chronic pain of hypermobility to be able to live with much less pain, increased function, and enhanced mobility.

Dr. Anderson noted that the most common of the 13 subtypes of EDS is Hypermobile EDS (hEDS). hEDS is characterized by joint hypermobility, mild involvement of the skin, acute or chronic pain, chronic fatigue, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and for some, gastroparesis. Many people with EDS are also affected by other syndromes which are tightly intertwined, such as Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), among others.

"Although there is no cure for EDS, Muscle & Joint Clinic's proven track record has allowed many patients to reduce pain and increase function," said Dr. Anderson. "We have helped patients devastated by pain, joint instability, and other aspects of EDS return to fuller, self-supporting lives. Many people with EDS are also affected by other syndromes which are tightly intertwined such as POTS, HT, CVID and MCAS."

Dr. Anderson explained, "Due to the lack of awareness, reliance on physical examinations for diagnosis, and diverse ways patients experience their symptoms, diagnosing EDS is not easy. Even with a correct diagnosis, doctors who do not specialize in this area are often unaware of how to treat patients with EDS. It is especially important with EDS patients to address the physical, emotional and chemical aspects of the human body affected by this syndrome."

Dr. Anderson and his team are experts in releasing tight, dysfunctional muscles, remobilizing immobilized tissues, and restoring proper motion and function. They hope that by increasing awareness of EDS this month, they will help more people get relief from their EDS symptoms.
