Zinc Oxide and Nano Zinc Oxide Approved for Use in Cosmetics Products
The European Commission has incorporated two new entries, Reference 30 and 30a, into Annex VI of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009. This follows a study by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) which concluded that Zinc Oxide and its Nano form can safely be used as an UV filter in concentrations of less than 25%, when applied dermally. Spray products are excluded from the regulation as they still pose a risk to the end user’s lungs from exposure through inhalation.
In addition to the requirements concerning the possibility of inhalation, the regulation relating to Nano Zinc Oxide also includes criteria relating to, amongst others: particle size, purity, and solubility.
The regulation became effective on May 12, 2016.
