COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Partnership for Clean Competition (PCC) announced today that it awarded over $1.0 M USD in grant funding to scientists advancing knowledge in the anti-doping sphere. The five new awards support research and equipment designed to enhance screening and detection methods of performance-enhancing substances in sport.

“This grant cycle represents an investment in the future of the anti-doping movement,” said Michael Pearlmutter, Executive Director. “We’re enabling innovation in the field through funding cutting edge technology and research projects, while fostering the next generation of anti-doping scientists through our fellowship program.”

The recipients of this most recent round of funding, which was approved recently by the PCC Board of Governors, represent research institutions in North America, Europe, and Australia:

• Dr. Liying Jiang for a PCC Fellowship working with Dr. David Cowan at the Drug Control Centre at King’s College London.
• Dr. James Harynuk at University of Alberta for his work entitled “Real-time screening for novel designer drugs and other controlled substances in doping control.”
• Dr. Emad Kiriakous at Queensland University for his work entitled “Rapid detection of EPO isoforms in blood by handheld Raman and electrochemical devices.”
• Dr. Nicolas Voelcker at University of South Australia for his work entitled “Rapid detection of performance-enhancing drugs using nanotechnology.”
• Dr. Daniel Eichner at Sports Medicine Research & Testing Laboratory and Dr. Anthony Butch at UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory for Dried Blood Spot Automated Sampling Handler equipment.

Including this most recent round of funding, the PCC has awarded more than $17 million in research grants to protect integrity in sport since 2008.

The PCC accepts micro-grant applications year-round for research requiring less than $75,000 and six months to complete. The PCC is already accepting applications for grants and fellowships for the third round of 2016. Pre-applications are due on November 1, with full applications due a month later for those whose pre-applications are accepted. Funding decisions are made within eight weeks and, since 2008, have ranged from $10,000 to more than $400,000, depending on the nature of the research and the funding needed.
