What began for Heather Brown as part-time copywriting to earn extra income evolved into a copywriting career that is now at its ten-year mark.

Citing a passion for writing that began in childhood, Brown's idea for monetizing her creativity began when her first daughter was very young. Brown began writing resumes for people around town, with her early advertising done on Craigslist, and writing small, low-paying articles for content mills online. Press releases are their own breed of content, offering a perfect opportunity for small and medium sized businesses to generate visibility with editorial content that includes online and offline arenas. One in four businesses publish more than 10 press releases per year, and nearly 70% of businesses have found raised brand/product visibility from press releases.

While there are templates and AI that can assist in press release writing, Brown has found that there is simply no competition for a skilled press release writer. "I can always tell when someone brings me a press release that was written based off of a template, or worse, something that they generated using ChatGPT," said Brown. "The problem is that this type of content is dangerous. Templates are too cookie cutter, and AI content is getting picked on by search engine algorithms."

She stresses that AI generated content simply does not meet Google's quality controls. In order to get press releases visible online, there is a certain degree of footwork that has to be done. "There's just no point in creating a good press release campaign or implementing this content into your marketing campaigns if the content itself isn't as good as it could be," said Brown.

This tier includes everything in the Standard package plus manual submissions to 30 local/niche outlets. While this does not guarantee publication, it's a great way to gain organic traction. Brown researches the list uniquely for the client, obtains contact information for each newsroom, and sends the press release with a soft pitch (where e-mail is the mode of contact). She encourages newsrooms to reach out directly to the client, and she then gives the client the full media list that was made for them - complete with the contact information for each outlet.
