Methanol is also known as wood alcohol and has a CH3OH as its chemical formula with 32.04 g/mol as its molecular weight. The melting and boiling points of methanol are 64.7 °C and -97.6 °C, respectively which is lower as compared to other alcohols. It is the simplest alcohol and is naturally produced by the distillation of wood. In industries, it is made from a combination of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas. It is a colorless liquid that is completely miscible in water and gives a nonluminous flame on burning. It can be used as an antifreeze, fuel, and solvent in organic synthesis. It had high toxicity and can cause permanent blindness in humans.
