Press release from: Georgia State Ethics Commission

ATLNATA, GEORGIA, OCTOBER 17, 2007: The Georgia State Ethics Commission (ethics.ga.gov) has achieved a new level of success. The Campaign Disclosure Project, a nationwide assessment of state-level campaign finance disclosure programs, has released the Grading State Disclosure for 2007 which can be viewed at www.campaigndisclosure.org/gradingstate. The study shows that within one year the Information Technology staff of the Georgia State Ethics Commission has improved the electronic filing program from a ranking of twelfth to number one in the nation. In addition, the State Ethics Commission's web site improved information available on campaign regulations and disclosure requirements, and as a result was one of only four states to earn the highest possible rating in the 2007 usability test.
On the newfound success Executive Secretary Rick Thompson made the following statement "Due to the diligent hard work of Brian Hess, Director of Information Technology, and his staff, Reginald Boswell and Delrico Davis, we have been able to provide candidates, lobbyists, and the citizens of Georgia with the best electronic filing program in the country."
The Chairman of the State Ethics Committee, William H. Jordan, was just as enthusiastic with the rankings, expressing the following comment "As a Commission we strive to implement the Ethics in Government Act with full transparency, accessibility, and ease-of-use. We are very pleased that through the incredibly hard work of our staff, Georgia has been evaluated in the Top 10 of all states for overall disclosure and as the best in the country for electronic filing. The Commission pledges to continue its work to make our campaign finance and lobbyist disclosure system the best that it can be.”

The State Ethics Commission enforces the laws under its jurisdiction through discreet investigative proceedings and open hearings. Most cases considered by the Commission are initiated through the filing of sworn, written complaints which allege a violation of one or more laws under the Commission’s jurisdiction. Enforcement powers include, but are not limited to, assessment of civil penalties and administrative costs, ordering of remedial actions, suspension or revocation of lobbyist registration privileges, and where necessary, reporting of suspected violations of law to the appropriate law enforcement authority.
