Contenders named for young freight forwarder awards
The names of the four finalists who will compete for the title of Young Freight Forwarder of the Year in this year’s Freight Service Awards organised by the British International Freight Association (BIFA) have been revealed.The four finalists are: Pradeep Bhowmick from the Glasgow office of Geodis Wilson; Eve Gogarty from Worldwide Energy Logistics Ltd in Feltham; Daniel McAllister from the Rainham office of Ideal International; and, Sukh Shinji from Allport at Heathrow.
Now in their 19th year, the BIFA Freight Service Awards are widely recognised as one of the most prestigious within the logistics and supply chain industry. They encourage and reward high professional standards and special achievements. Entries for the Young Freight Forwarder Award came from employees of BIFA members under the age of 30 with a minimum of two years’ experience within the freight industry.
The eventual winner of the award will be announced at the BIFA Annual Lunch and Awards Ceremony to be held at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, London on Thursday 17th January 2008. Special guest, broadcaster and former MP for Chester, Mr Gyles Brandreth, will host the event and more than 450 BIFA members and their guests are expected to attend.
The winner will receive a trophy and a cheque for £1,000, whilst the three runners-up will each be presented with a cheque for £200.
Peter Quantrill, BIFA Director General, says: “This Young Freight Forwarder Award offers individuals working for our members the perfect chance to be recognised as the UK’s best young logistician. By nominating an entrant, members demonstrate to their staff that they are serious about the standards they uphold as well as encouraging and motivating young individuals to succeed.
“The importance of these awards comes in the recognition they give to the value of training in the industry. BIFA knows that training is an investment, which is why we have dedicated time and effort into developing a professional qualification structure for individuals working within the freight industry. Training allows your organisation to reap the rewards for years to come with increased confidence, improved customer service and fewer errors.”
Entrants for the Young Freight Forwarder category had to describe their career achievements and outline their goals and aspirations in the freight industry. They also had to submit a 700-word article entitled: ‘How can freight forwarders contribute to reducing the impact of transport on the environment?’
This Award is being sponsored for the third year running by Barking, Essex-based liner agent Johnson Stevens Agencies. A BIFA member since the early days of the Association, Johnson Stevens Agencies has always worked closely with freight forwarders throughout the UK and Ireland.
Interviews and judging of finalists will take place in December. The eventual winner will be nominated as the UK candidate in the Europe category of the FIATA/TT Club/IATA Young International Freight Forwarder of the Year Award 2008 competition.

Freight forwarders win reprieve over consignment information
