However, such targeted compound removal generally requires the use of magnetic beads with a pathogen-specific capturing agent and thus has been significantly limiting the future applicability of magnetic blood purification. Particularly, urgent medical situations, such as acute intoxications or blood stream infections where the disease-causing factor is unknown, remain challenging.
