"I moved to Lagos after campus a couple of summers ago, fell in love with R&B," he wrote. The song artwork features a photo of the artist, born Nnamani Chimaobi John, standing on water in the middle of a paint-like remote area, backing the sunlight. Explaining the record's tone, Johnel shared: "It's deep but not sad … I'm not sad anymore."
Moving to Lagos gave Johnel NG a major change of environment and introduced him to the main inspiration for his next song, "Wake Up, It's Daylight." The musician teased the tune, which will be her first since this year, on Instagram with a number of photos.
"A few summers ago, I moved to Lagos after college and fell in love with R&B," he wrote. The song's artwork is a picture of the artist, real name Nnamani Chimaobi John, standing in front of the sun while backing up on water in a desolate, paint-like setting. Johnel provided an explanation of the record's mood, saying, "It's deep but not sad." I've overcome my sadness.
For the budding artist, the news of new music-even if it's just a teaser-is encouraging. Johnel leaked the first taste of the single, "Wake Up, It's Daylight," ahead of the song's announcement. The song, which draws inspiration from made-up events, is scheduled for release on January 26, through ONErpm.
Johnel was born in Lagos and moved around the Nigerian state of Enugu during his early years. He says that viewing music videos of singers like Lil Wayne, Drake, and Wizkid as a child impacted his desire to become a full-time artist. When Johnel was still in high school, he started pursuing his music career in 2020. "I was captivated with the swag and how great I would feel while watching (them)," he says.
