FibroScan provides a quantitative measurement of liver stiffness, which is a key indicator of liver fibrosis, and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), which reflects the amount of fat in the liver. The procedure involves using a specialized device called a FibroScan machine, which consists of an ultrasound probe and a vibrtor. The patient lies on their back, and a water-based gel is applied to the skin to ensure good contact. The ultrasound probe is then placed on the skin's surface, usually at the right intercostal spaces, where the liver is located. The probe generates a low-frequency mechanical pulse that creates a shear wave, which propagates through the liver tissue. The velocity of the shear wave is directly related to the liver's stiffness, with stiffer liver tissue indicating more advanced fibrosis. The FibroScan machine measures the time it takes for the shear wave to travel through the liver and calculates liver stiffness in kilopascals (kPa). Similarly, the CAP is determined by analysing the ultrasound signals' attenuation through the liver, providing an estimation of fat content.
