Worrying new business trend to ignore data backups

Cape Town, South Africa – 21st November 2007 – Kroll Ontrack, a data recovery service provider, conducted a global survey investigating whether or not companies provided for data recovery in their compliance policies. The results were rather startling. Regulations exist, which clearly state that companies are responsible for protecting their data and are bound to make significant attempts to retrieve it should it become compromised or lost. However, only half of the survey’s respondents said that this was the case.

A misleading statistic showed that 78% of respondents believed that data recovery was the most important component of a compliance plan, while on the opposite end of the spectrum, 43% said that they didn’t test their back-up systems and therefore didn’t know if their data was recoverable should a disastrous event occur.
