**LIFE Camp Inc. To Host The Very First Immersive Practicum in New York City, for University of Chicago Crime Lab's CVI Leadership Academy, in Partnership with the Black & Brown Peace Consortium
New York, NY - November 13 - 17, 2023 - LIFE Camp Inc.
LIFE Camp Inc, a leading gun violence prevention organization in New York City and founding member of the New York City Crisis Management System, will be hosting the Inaugural Practicum for the very first cohort of the University of Chicago's Groundbreaking Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy. Over the past year, LIFE Camp Inc CEO and Co-Founder, Erica Ford, has Co-chaired a national steering committee called the Black & Brown Peace Coalition; together, they worked alongside the University of Chicago Crime Lab to initiate the groundbreaking Community Violence Intervention Leadership Academy (CVILA). From November 13-17, 2023 LIFE Camp Inc. will provide a first-of-its-kind immersive training for 31 emerging senior and executive leaders in the field of community violence intervention, who lead organizations across 21 cities around the nation that are disproportionately impacted by gun violence.
This Academy is one of the first of the Crime Lab's newly formed Community Safety Leadership Academies (CSLA), which was launched due to the success of data-driven management in cities like New York and Los Angeles respectively, and Crime Lab research showing the game-changing impact of overhauling public safety management practices.
This Practicum, entitled: Community Wellness: Building and Restoring Healthy Communities through a Systems Based Approach to Violence as a Public Health Issue, provides a hands-on practical learning experience through simulations and field work, all focused on the nexus of community wellness and public safety.
The week kicks off on Monday, November 13, 2023 at the NYPD Training Academy in College Point, NY, a state-of-the-art facility which will provide the backdrop for interactive simulations and engaging dialogue that will show the steps that LIFE Camp and the 113th pct used to overcome the barriers that preceded their success in achieving 562 days with no shootings and 4 years with no killings in their designated area.
"Individuals get the opportunity to put all of the things they've learned in the first two modules into practice and learn from experts in the field who have been doing this for decades. I'm excited that they get the opportunity to learn from a trailblazer like Erica Ford who has been doing this work for more than 30 years and can glean from her wisdom and her experienced staff to incorporate the things they have learned into their own organizations around the nation." - Says Dr. Chico Tillmon, Director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab CVI Leadership Academy.
"To achieve true community safety in our neighborhoods, we believe the work of CVI is indispensable. Our hope is to see this civilian based ecosystem of public safety be mainstreamed and supported in the same way as traditional law enforcement with resources, professional development and technical assistance." States Pastor Micheal McBride Co-Chair of Black Brown Peace Coalition & Executive Director of Live FREE USA
"This is Historic moment at a time when Peace is needed more than ever to see us all coming together to learn, grow, professionalize and respect frontline credible messengers' workforce". "Personally to live to see the fruits of my labor and the labor of all those leading alongside me is humbling to say the least." stated by Erica Ford
Invited Guests include: NYC Mayor Eric Adams; First Deputy Mayor, Sheena Wright; Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey; NYPD Chief of Training, Olufunilo Obe and a host of other NYPD Officials; Greg Jackson & Rob Wilcox, Co-Deputy Directors, White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention; Calliana Thomas, Director, NY State Office of Gun Violence Prevention; All South East Queens Elected Officials; Czar, NYC Gun Violence Prevention, AT Mitchell and Leaders & Credible Messengers from across the New York City Crisis Management System; LIFE Camp Chief of Streets AU Hogan; LIFE Camp Chief Wellness Officer, Kheperah Kearse; Pastor Gil Monrose, Office of Faith Based & Community Partnerships; DYCD Commissioner Keith Howard; Oresa Napper-Williams, CEO, Not Another Child and Member of the BBPC Steering Committee; Dr. Chico Tillmon, Director, University of Chicago CVILA; Dr. Chris Smith, Principal, Eagle Academy for Young Men of Southeast Queens and many more.
