Psychedelic Therapy is a focus at Soul Tribes International Ministries

Summer nights on a Friday are filled with anticipation - for the fun to be had over the weekend, completing the work week, and everything in between. This particular Friday was no different, except that the anticipation involved spiritual healing. This Friday night, Soul Tribes was hosting a spiritual ceremony using sacred plant medicine.

Soul Tribes International Church is open to everyone. On this particular night, there were four individuals anticipating a touch from God, the Creator, the Supreme Being, to help relieve the suffering created by their personal traumas.

A major symptom of trauma is anxiety and/or depression. In February, 2023, The Henry Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) reported that 30% of adults in Michigan suffer from anxiety and depression, compared to just over 32% of adults in the US (KFF.org). In an alarming survey conducted by the University of Michigan in June of 2021, 50% of students from Detroit Public Schools District reported symptoms of anxiety or depression and a staggering 23% had considered attempting suicide within the past year (MichiganMedicine.org). These statistics are resounding signals that our people are in need of serious help. What has been done in the past is no longer working, at least exclusively.

Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine published results of their research in February, 2022 of the efficacy of psilocybin's for the treatment of anxiety and depression. Roland Griffiths PhD, is the founder of their Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, who stated "Psilocybin not only produces significant and immediate effects, it also has a long duration, which suggests that it many be a uniquely useful new treatment for depression". The article cited that 75% of study participants responded with one psilocybin treatment, with 58% experiencing relief for at least 12 months. Dr. Griffiths went further to say express "compared to standard antidepressants, which must be taken for long stretches of time, psilocybin has the potential to enduringly relieve symptoms of depression with one or two treatments". (Journal of Psychopharmacology. "Efficacy and safety of psilocybin-assisted treatment for major depressive disorder: Prospective 12 month follow-up". Volume 36, Issue 2. Gukasyan et al). This is groundbreaking! So why hasn't this treatment spread like wildfire?

Sacred plants have been used for centuries to heal the mind, soul and physical ailments. After all, pharmaceuticals or prescription medicines were derived from plants. Eastern medicine continues the traditions of the sacred plants, known as ayahuasca, psilocybins, mushrooms, and others, to this day. Western medicine has adapted away from natural, sacred plants toward pharmaceuticals or prescription medicines, which have far more side effects and potential lower effectiveness. In America, we have even attached stigma to these gifts from the Creator by calling them "psychedelics" or hallucinogens. Oftentimes, when people do not understand something, it becomes easy to reject it and ostracize it as something harmful. In this case, that is simply not true. I urge everyone to do the research for themselves.

Soul Tribes purpose is to restore the ancient healing modalities of sacred plants in the Detroit community. Each of the four individuals that chose our church for their healing journey on that Friday night, had been to multiple mainstream therapists and physicians, and had taken prescribed medications or illicit drugs to heal the pain…without great success.

The ceremony began with education about the sacred mushroom and what they will experience. A reading of the scripture ensued by Shaman Shu, followed by prayer and supplication to the Creator for joining them on this journey. The participants set intentions for what they wanted to achieve. Some examples of intentions were "to be free from street drugs" or "to feel whole again". With these intentions duly noted, the ceremony began.

With healing music playing, candles lit, and hearts ready to receive, the participants ingested the sacred plant and lied down to receive their blessing. Overseers of the church were onsite to pray with and for each of the participants during the ceremony. Shaman Shu, as the leader of the ceremony, sets the tone for unconditional love to permeate the room. At times, you might see Shaman Shu or one of the overseers holding a participant as they sob profusely, or cry out to relieve the pain that they had been carrying for most of their lives. This is the work of true healing. Getting to the source of the pain to release it and find God's unconditional love. It is hard work, but it is truly worth it.
