How Does Japanese Knotweed Spread?
Japanese knotweed is a fast-growing invasive weed that is feared by UK landowners due to the impact it can have on property values and the damage it can cause if left untreated.Unlike most plants, Japanese knotweed doesn't spread via the seeds. While it does produce seeds, they don't germinate - instead, it's the stem, rhizome and crown that enable the weed to spread.
Let's take a closer look at how this happens:
Stem - When in water or soil, the nodes of the plant's green stems can grow into a new plant.
Rhizome - Even a tiny piece of rhizome (root) can grow into a new plant if left in the soil. This makes it very hard to completely eradicate Japanese knotweed!
Crown - Japanese knotweed can spread when the crown comes into contact with soil or water. The crown is particularly hard to dispose of and can even survive composting and drying.
Japanese knotweed grows very quickly, and because it's classified as an invasive species here in the UK, you can find yourself in legal trouble if you allow the plant to spread from your property onto neighbouring land.
So what can you do to get Japanese knotweed under control? Removing the plant yourself is not recommended - the roots go very deep, so it's difficult to pull up by hand, and you can only dispose of the plant at an approved landfill site (you can't just toss it in your green waste bin).
For the best results, get in touch with a professional Japanese knotweed removal company. A trained professional will be able to assess the extent of your knotweed infestation and recommend the best course of action. They should also be able to provide a formal Japanese knotweed management plan (JKMP) and an insurance-backed guarantee, which is especially important if you're trying to buy or sell a property with Japanese knotweed.
