Press release from: The CHARMED Foundation

NEW YORK (Feb. 25, 2016) – The Children and Athletes Regenerative Medicine (CHARMED) Foundation announced its launch today. Headquartered in New York City, the CHARMED Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization, dedicated to accelerating the development and translation of regenerative medicine therapies specifically designed for the functional needs of children and athletes.

The CHARMED Foundation is a focused collaborative effort involving leading scientists, bioengineers and clinicians. CHARMED Executive Director and Boston native, MaryAnn R. O’Neill, hails from years of founding both 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt non-profit and for-profit organizations such as MedSmart and Asana Medical. Leading the Scientific Board of Advisors is Dr. Robert E. Guldberg, Executive Director of the Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience at the Georgia Institute of Technology and an international leader in the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine field.

“We are so excited that CHARMED has come to life as there is a great need for a foundation that focuses specifically on regenerative medicine research regarding children and athletes,” said O’Neill. “The human body’s ability to heal itself is fascinating and CHARMED plans to be a driving force behind research and funds in the field.”

The CHARMED Foundation is the first of its kind to support regenerative medicine research specific to pediatric illnesses and sports medicine. The Foundation focuses on three research specific focus areas: cell manufacturing, personalized medical devices and therapeutic delivery.

“The unique functional needs and physiology of children and athletes make them ideally suited for emerging regenerative therapies designed to cooperate with the patient’s own healing capabilities and provide long-term biological solutions,” said Guldberg. “I am honored to be a part of the CHARMED Foundation and its vision and I look forward to all that we will accomplish.”

The CHARMED Foundation recently donated $150,000 in grant monies to begin three research projects at Georgia Tech’s Petit Institute making headway for engineers, scientists and clinicians to explore regenerative medicine therapies for issues specific to children and athletes. This funding will provide preliminary results that can be leveraged to secure federal funding dollars in the future. The expected impact of the CHARMED Foundation is to transform the pediatric healthcare system and dramatically improve the availability of safe and effective regenerative medicine therapies for children and athletes within 10 years.
