Adelphi University Presents “Jennifer Maloney: How Are Things?”

Press release from: Adelphi University Performing Arts Center

GARDEN CITY, NY, February 2016—The Adelphi University Exhibitions Program is pleased to present a captivating exhibition featuring oil paintings and assemblages by Associate Professor Jennifer Maloney. Created during her sabbatical, How Are Things? explores the nature of hoarding, saving and procrastinating. This exhibition will be on view in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, N.Y., from Sunday, March 13 through April 17, 2016. A reception will be held on Wednesday, March 23, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

“My goal is, through interplay and interlocking imagery, to transform these ordinary tools and trinkets into something beyond their function. I believe that certain objects reveal something about who we are, were, or want to be. The stacks I create are products of my memory. I don't want to explain them. I don't think that I could if I tried. But, I want to present them so that they can be evocative in an existential way,” said Maloney. The paintings and assemblages become a cultural conversation about how objects interact with our eyes and minds when we cast them in fresh light and focus our energy on their intersections and interactions. Ultimately, Maloney considers herself a consumer, collector, and cataloguer.

Jennifer Maloney is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. where she lives and works. She received her MFA from Brooklyn College. She is a tenured professor at Adelphi University and has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and New York Institute of Technology.

Harley University Center Gallery is open Monday through Friday, from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Find us on social media: Facebook: Adelphi Exhibitions, and Twitter/Instagram: @AUExhibitions.
