CISC to launch RFID Tag Emulation Innovation

Press release from: CISC Semiconductor

The newly designed tool “CISC RFID Tag Emulator” is used as UHF RFID tags in order to test, analyze, and verify UHF RFID system installations and readers.

Klagenfurt, AUSTRIA – November 13, 2007. CISC Semiconductor today announced the launch of its latest innovation, the “CISC RFID Tag Emulator”. The technology applied within this tool is developed by CISC Semiconductor and offers an entirely new approach to test, analyze, and verify - both RFID system installations and readers. The CISC RFID Tag Emulator consists of the following hardware components: The Tag Emulator’s main component is a powerful multi-core processor unit, based on FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array). Additionally, the CISC Sensor Modules are connected to the emulation tool. These CISC Sensor Modules play an important role for various emulations and tests. The Modules – also developed by CISC Semiconductor- are used instead of real RFID tags in order to emulate and behave like the real RFID tags.

The unprecedented aspect is that the user is able to set various tag parameters according to the intended application. The emulated tag can be fully controlled and could be adjusted to any parameter sets in order to define worst or best case scenarios. All timing (delimiter tolerance, tari tolerance, rtcal tolerance, trcal tolerance) and performance parameters (backscatter signal strength, accuracy of signal) are adjustable to emulate different scenarios. The evaluation reaches further: Not only common test scenarios are carried out, but also evaluations of applications or readers at the edge of the specification are possible. With usual RFID tags such evaluations would not be manageable, because the borderline parameters are not adjustable. Therefore, the CISC Sensor Modules together with the CISC Tag Emulator are capable to emulate any set UHF RFID tag in order to test, verify, analyze UHF RFID systems.

“We configured the CISC RFID Tag Emulator with 16 high-speed analog inputs and outputs, to allow for a real-time and efficient emulation,” said Mr. DI Josef Preishuber-Pflügl, CTO and business unit manager RFID+RFComm at CISC. “On one hand, reader manufacturers are now provided with an accurate and precise performance testing tool and on the other hand, system integrators are supported with an advanced evaluation tool.”

Furthermore, the CISC RFID Tag Emulator is feasible to emulate complex standards like EPCglobalTM Class 1 Generation 2 UHF RFID Protocol and also future protocols.
