Vanishing beauty
markilux cassette awnings invisibly integrated into a modern detached house in AustriaIn 2020 in the Innviertel region of Austria, close to the German/Austrian border, a couple has made their dreams come true with a spacious detached house in an unsophisticated, modern style. To ensure the external solar protection was in keeping with the look of the building, the architect decided to have the awnings disappear completely into an overhang on the façade. The markilux 3300 model, which was developed precisely for such a scenario, fits the bill perfectly.
In the town of Geinberg, in the Ried district of Upper Austria, you can come across a residential building that catches the eye because of its purist architecture. It is a cubic building with lots of windows and a light grey panelled façade. The owners had asked that the house make a clear design statement in a distinctive style. Expansive awning systems are part of the concept. They provide protection against too much sun on the ground-floor windows facing south and south-west. The challenge was that the owners did not want the shading system to be visible. The architect opted for systems from markilux because the manufacturer has a special model in its range which can be fully integrated into the outer shell of a building: the markilux 3300.
Front panel in keeping with the façade material
"The architect working on the residential property had become aware of our awning system as used in a reference project in Salzburg. This system suited what he had in mind perfectly," explains Christiane Berning, Head of the Marketing and Business Development Department at markilux. The cassette body, which accommodates the cover and mechanics, was elegantly integrated into the architecture by means of overhanging sections on the façade. The overhangs accommodate three separate folding-arm awnings including several infrared heaters and cover an area of almost 60 square metres . "The awnings can be controlled individually and thus used as required. As they extend out a long way, they also provide good glare protection," says Ms Berning. The most important thing, however, was that the solar protection system completely merge with the façade once retracted. This visual effect was realised by coating the front profiles of the awnings with the same material that covers the façade. Even the pointing was imitated. And the grey striped cover also suits the design style of the building perfectly.
Awnings are much appreciated and in frequent use
"We developed the markilux 3300 in this special form years ago specifically to have the additional option of being able to discreetly integrate an awning into the outer shell of a building," explains the Head of Marketing. The model tends to be used on distinctive properties that have very high emphasis placed on their design. As a rule, modern awnings like those from markilux tend to speak their very own design language today. Most customers therefore regard them as a chic accessory that emphasise the architecture of the house. "However, it is important for us to be able to offer the right awning model for every style of building or design concept. And that's why we are delighted that it has worked in this residential property in Geinberg," explains Christiane Berning. The clients use the awnings regularly, and were very satisfied with the entire planning process as well as with their installation.
