Press release from: Online Learning Tutoring

The United Nations high commission for human rights recognizes play as basic right for all the children. Play not only offers children with an opportunity to have fun but it also presents them with a learning experience that is great. In fact, it is advocated that children should be allowed to engage more in unregulated and unstructured play. However, this does not imply that the parents or the care givers should comprise on the safety of the children during play. The following paper discusses the importance of play on a child's overall development, how play and skills learned affect specific area of development and various issues that should be discussed with parents on the importance of play and how it is a child's 'occupation'.
Importance of Play on a child's overall development.
Play is the gateway to different forms of development that occur in a child. Without play it would not be possible for a child to grow and develop effectively. Right from child hood, the body of a child undergoes through different stages of development that eventually lead to puberty and to adulthood. When children play, they are able to learn about themselves and the things that surround them. As the children play, they are able to test their body limits and in the process, they are able to learn and develop new skills such as running. Through play, the children learn how to interact with others by improving the ability to speak, to solve problems and to work together (Brown). Play also helps the children to develop important qualities such as self-control which are very important in the future. Through play, children learn how to regulate their feelings, negotiate, and delay their desires which are important qualities in developing self-control. Therefore, after examining the importance of play on child's overall development, the next part will examine how play affects specific areas of development.
How do play and skills learned in play affect different areas of development?
The reason why play is very important to children is because it contributes to cognitive, physical, emotional, and social development of a child. This section examines the effect that play has on specific areas of development. These areas include language, cognition, psychosocial, motor, adaptive, social skills and sensory. On the first area that is language, play promotes the ability of the children to speak and learn a new language. Children are able to learn new words and how to communicate through the interaction that they engage in during play. The next area is cognition, where the children are able to exercise their thoughts and explore ideas which develops their cognitive ability. This is also facilitated by engaging in various activities that involve solving problems and by simply engaging in various activities that requires them to use their mind (Pathways.org). The third area is psychosocial, where through play, the children acquire important qualities such as self-control that help improving their psychosocial skills. The children also learn how to control and process their emotions which promotes their psychosocial skills.
Play also contributes a lot in building the motor skills in the children. For instance, it is through play that most children learn how to coordinate their body movements. In addition, various activities that are involved in play involve exercises that enable children to develop motor skills such as walking (Ginsburg). Play also assists the children in developing adaptive skills. During play, children encounter new circumstances and experiences that relate to the real world. For instance children get to play under different circumstances and with other children that are entirely different from them. Learning how to cope with these challenges among other issues that are experienced usually promotes adaptability to various situations in the world. Play involves interaction with other children and in the process, the children are able to acquire different social skills. For instance, children learn how to relate well with one other and how to maintain positive social relationships. Lastly, play helps in development of sensory skills in children where by contributing to cognitive ability that a child has, play facilitates the process where the brain receives interprets and effectively utilizes the information provided various sensory organs.
What would you tell a parent about the importance of play and how it is a child's "occupation?
There is a need to sensitize the parents on the importance of play and how it can improve various aspects of the life of a child. Parents should be made to understand that play is an integral part of the life of a child. At first, parents must be sensitized on the need to create a balance between play and other aspects of the life of a child. At first, it is important to state clearly to a parent that effective development in a child is promoted by creating a loving relationship as parents relate with the children through play. It is important for a parent to take time to observe or join their children as they play. The interaction that is involved helps in creating a lasting relationship with a child. However, the important thing is that children should be given an opportunity to play right from an early age. Therefore, when having a discussion with a parent on the importance of play, there is a need to focus on the various benefits that are derived from engaging in play and why play should be made a part of the life of a child.
