This report aims to help leaders in business, government, and higher education understand the rapidly changing skills landscape, through the lens of learner activity on Coursera, and provides insight into talent distribution worldwide," said Nicole Amaral, Skills Transformation Lead for Latin America and the Caribbean at Coursera.
Key Mexico insights from the report include:
● Mexico is the third largest market for Coursera globally and the leading market for Latin America, with 5.7 million registered learners, which accounts for 28% of all learners on Coursera in the region. In Mexico, the average learner age is 33, with 50% using mobile learning. The country achieved gender parity, with women accounting for 51% of total Mexican learners registered on Coursera, reaching the same level as the US at 51% and surpassing Brazil at 46%.
● Mexico is a rising hub of technology talent, with learners ranking 4th globally for proficiency in technology skills. Learners in Mexico earned cutting-edge scores in skills aligned to jobs of the future such as theoretical computer science (96%), computer networking (96%), databases (97%), and operating systems (97%). They also continue to invest in STEM skills, with 550,000 STEM course enrollments in the last year alone and women learners accounting for 37% of these enrollments. According to the Ministry of Economy, Mexico has become the fourth largest exporter of IT services worldwide with a growth average annual rate of 11.2%, and Manpower research found that almost all of the jobs expected to grow in the next four years in Mexico are in IT and technology-related fields.
● Data Science is another area of strength for talent in Mexico, earning the 11th rank worldwide for skills proficiency. Learners in Mexico also obtained cutting-edge skill scores in critical areas such as Data Management (97%), Statistical Programming (95%), Data Analysis (95%), and Probability & Statistics (94%). In fact, according to a study made by the ISEP University of Mexico, Mexico is one of the leaders in data analysis in Latin America, with an estimated regional growth of 10%. However, Business skills mark the largest area for improvement, with communication (93%) and accounting (73%) being the exceptions.
● Compared to learners in other countries, Mexicans are more likely to invest in business skills like accounting and data analysis software, and design-related technology skills like interactive design and computer graphic techniques. In data science, learners are significantly more likely to invest in data analysis software than other countries, which is also a foundational business skill.
Dr. Adriana Portilla, Academic Institutional Director of Insurgentes University said "Our university's mission is to provide relevant and accessible education that positively impacts our community. The flexibility of our education model and expansion through our partnership with Coursera have enabled us to embrace digital transformation and enhance the overall educational experience. Over 1,500 students have completed nearly 80,000 lessons so far, demonstrating a real interest from students to develop digital skills and credentials within their degree program that will prepare them to thrive in the modern workforce."
Guadalupe Campos Maya, 8th-semester student of Marketing at Universidad Insurgentes, said "I feel ready to kick-start my career once I graduate with my bachelor's degree. The incorporation of courses on Coursera's courses enriched my academic preparation and expanded my knowledge in relevant areas, providing subject expertise and the opportunity to earn certifications from renowned international universities, setting me apart in the job market and propelling me towards a promising future."
With more than 124 million learners, 7,000 institutions, and 5,400 courses from 300 of the world's top universities and industry partners, Coursera has one of the largest data sets for identifying and measuring skill trends. In the Global Skills Report, 100 countries are ranked against one another, with percentile rankings attributed to each skill proficiency. A country that shows 100% skills proficiency ranks at the top of the 100 countries, and a country at 0% is at the bottom.
